Early History of Corcoran
Minnesota, inhabited by paleo-indian tribes over 7,000 years ago, saw the Dakota people establish their presence long before European explorers arrived. French exploration began in the 17th century, and the U.S. gained control in 1825 with Fort Snelling’s completion.

Settlement and Founding
In 1851, treaties with the Dakota opened the area for settlement. Benjamin Pounder arrived in 1855, followed by Patrick B. Corcoran, who farmed 640 acres and helped found the town. French settlers like Michael Patnode also contributed to the early community.

Community Development
P.B. Corcoran built the town’s first school in 1857 and opened a general store, which became a community hub. By 1858, Corcoran was officially established, naming the town after its founder, and the community began to grow.

Pioneer Journey
Joseph Morin traveled from Montreal, reaching Corcoran in 1856 with his wife. They settled and raised 11 children, embodying the pioneer spirit that shaped Corcoran’s history.
